Chapter 13

Sanjay sat on the front steps of the school with a sharpened pipe in hand, waiting for the group. The car lights flashed once across the grass, signaling their return.

Over Marissa’s shoulder, Lily watched him jump from the steps to unlock the gate and push it open so they could drive through. Once the car cleared the gate, he rushed to close and lock it again.

Two infected roamed toward them, their slow steps and guttural moans echoing around them as Marissa killed the car engine. The infected wandered up to the locked gate, sticking their hands through the iron bars to get at Sanjay.

He scowled and lifted the pipe in his hand like a Greek warrior. The tip of the pipe surged through the first infected’s head before the body crumpled to the round. A small trail of congealed blood and purple goop followed the pipe’s path. He quickly dispatched the second infected.

The moaning around them stopped.

Lily hopped out of the car. “Have you seen Sammy?” she asked.

“Your little girl? Yeah, she was playing with Flynn and Carly in the garage. It’s off to the side a bit, just around the corner. That whole area’s fenced off.” Sanjay helped Virginia lift one of the heavier duffle bags from the trunk.

“We need to get the bags inside first. You can find them after we bring these to the armory,” Marissa instructed.

Grant nodded, moving back toward the trunk. He lifted one of the bags and shoved it onto his shoulder.

Lily gripped a smaller bag with both hands and did the same.

He walked while she waddled toward the armory. Despite his half a dozen offers to help her, Lily insisted on carrying the heavy bag herself. By the time they reached the armory, she thought her shoulders might pop out of their sockets. She dropped the bag inside with a sigh of relief.

“Let’s go find Sammy and Flynn,” she panted.

Grant eased his bag down against a wall. He said nothing as he followed her out to the back garage.

Following Sanjay’s instructions, they rounded the corner of the school along a fenced-in area.

Sammy sat near a tree, using a wrench to try and dig up a pile of dirt.

“Hi, sweetie,” Lily said, crouching down a few feet from Sammy.

“Mommy!” Sammy jumped to her feet. The little bundle of excitement rushed into her mother’s arms, burying her bushy head into the crux of her mother’s neck. Her tiny arms barely reached around her mother’s shoulders.

Lily lifted her up rested her baby girl on her hips as made their way across the yard toward Flynn.

Flynn stood, his head flung back in laughter as a young woman in her late teens stood in front of him with a gleaming white grin and sparkling emerald eyes. Her hand reached out and touched Flynn’s arm as her curtain of black hair whipped behind her in the wind.

Jealousy bubbled in Lily’s gut as Flynn continue talking to her.

The woman’s tight tank top and Daisy Duke shorts gnawed at the back of Lily’s mind.
